Datadog is a cloud observability and security monitoring platform founded in 2010 and headquartered in New York. It provides infrastructure monitoring, application performance monitoring (APM), log management, security information and event management (SIEM), real user monitoring (RUM), and over 700 integrations. Publicly traded since 2019, Datadog serves over 29,000 customers across development, operations, and security teams.
Pricing is modular and usage-based with the cost driven by host count, log volume, and which product modules are enabled. Infrastructure Monitoring: Pro at $15/host/month (annual) or $18 on-demand; Enterprise at $23/host (annual) or $27 on-demand. A host is any compute unit — a VM, physical server, Kubernetes node, or cloud instance. APM: Standard at $31/host/month (annual), Pro at $35, Enterprise at $40. Log Management: ingestion at $0.10/GB; indexing billed separately at $1.70–$2.50/million events depending on retention period (3 to 30 days). DevSecOps Pro at $27/host, Enterprise at $41/host. A free plan covers up to 5 hosts with 1-day metric retention — appropriate for learning but not production use.
Billing uses a high-water mark model (HWMP) — Datadog measures your host count every hour, discards the top 1% of usage spikes, and bills based on the 99th-percentile peak. This protects against temporary spikes but means you pay for peak capacity, not average usage. A 5-day product launch scaling from 50 to 200 hosts results in a bill based on 200 hosts for the entire month.
Three compounding cost drivers consistently surprise teams: cardinality growth (each microservice, tag, or deployment environment multiplies unique time series), container misconfiguration (agent deployed per pod instead of per node can 10x host count overnight on Kubernetes clusters), and SKU sprawl (unused RUM, Database Monitoring, and CI Visibility modules left enabled after pilots). Mid-size teams with 60 hosts and 50–150 GB/day of logs typically spend $20,000–$25,000/month. When observability spend exceeds approximately 5% of infrastructure budget or $20,000/month, open-source alternatives (Prometheus, Loki, Grafana, OpenTelemetry) can cut costs by 50–75%. Datadog commonly attempts 5% price increases at renewal but customers report successfully negotiating flat rates with multi-year commitments.
